Lunch Buddy Program Rest Stops & Roadmaps

Posted in Music by Tess Dixon on Feb 7 2008

Lunch Buddy ProgramLunch Buddy Program captures that familiar, emo-y goodness that you can never put your finger on when describing an album. That steady, wistful-sounding, droning, therapeutic cocoon that feels so good in which to wrap one’s ears. The resonating finger-picking over a constant, quick bass line. It’s all there. Rest Stops & Roadmaps is a legitimate, enjoyable musical attempt rather than the proverbial “same old thing.” Perhaps this can be a bit formulaic, but formulas are around because they work.

The Frail Count On This

Posted in Music by Tess Dixon on Feb 7 2008

The FrailLess substantive than The Faint and not quite tormented enough to fill that Postal Service-shaped hole, The Frail’s Count On This EP satisfies nevertheless. It’s music to fix your hair to: just the sugary sweet electronic goodness you were looking for during those less-than-epic moments. Head-bobbing and foot-tapping will be unavoidable. Summed up adequately with the word “flirtatious,” The Frail have created an upbeat coquette of an EP that’s rather pretty. Maybe not beautiful, but pretty.

Soso Tinfoil On the Windows

soso.jpgSoso is better than alright; in fact I’d say it’s great. Ambient, pretty, and undulating, the music washes over you like a giant reverb-laden sedative cocktail. In contrast, Tinfoil On the Windows is lyrically blunt and anguished. The vocals are a mixture of singing and talking, at times reminiscent of that “Wear Sunscreen” song from the nineties — but done right (only minimally cheesy). Soso is not afraid to tackle those high notes, however creakily… but this is the type of music where you want a little creak. A little reality. The album is diverse, and the mood changes from fevered to lazily meandering and back again. I like when you can tell that a musical project is someone’s “baby;” their pride and joy. And I think this is one of those projects.
