While their pedigree as former members of City Of Caterpillar and Majority Rule might lead one to expect screamy, chaotic tendencies, Ghastly City Sleep instead opt for quite a different direction. The band’s self-titled debut features only four tracks, yet spans over thirty minutes, all the while presenting a blend of both ethereal and melodic passages. At varying points throughout these spacious songs, elements of Ghastly City Sleep’s music conjure thoughts of Christie Front Drive, Sigur Rós, Explosions In The Sky, and Slowdive, all the while maintaining a strong identity uniquely their own.

Variant Cause Excavating Variant Cause (1980s Pacific Northwest, Vol. 2)
Posted in Music by Tess Dixon on Sep 11 2007
It boggles the mind that a feeble 80s garage-rock band like this should even have its own retrospective. Nonetheless, Variant Cause seems to have racked up some modest credibility by sharing stages with the likes of such diverse acts as Alice in Chains and Iggy Pop. They may have contributed as pathfinders for the Pacific Northwest music scene, but they sound like the Meat Puppets trying to play Talking Heads covers. Not a good mix. For the two of you who have heard of Variant Cause, enjoy. For the rest of you, don’t bother.
